This body of work revolves around camouflage as a way to examine the concepts of assimilation and visibility. Camouflage can refer to the common military pattern or an attempt to disguise. Using camouflage outside of its appropriate context, it no longer serves its purpose of hiding the subject, and it instead calls attention to the wearer. These works are a collection of patterns that are interpretations of specific landscapes; these places are broken down into their most distinctive colors, shapes, and architectural qualities and then reconstructed into abstract patterns printed onto textile. These patterns are organic and modular in that the colors are variable and the shapes can be rearranged in unlimited compositions. These patterns are then constructed into disguises; such as ski masks, smog masks, bandannas, t-shirts, hoodies, scarves, etc. The objects and patterns are not intended to truly conceal the wearer but to highlight the futile attempts at blending in with a new locale.
This series of printed objects are inspired by specific neighborhoods and architecture of Wrocław, Poland; Sciacca, Sicily; Reston, USA; and Stöðvarfjörður, Iceland.
Hiding Out in the Open is the thesis exhibition held at Galeria za Szkłem, Wrocław, Poland. This exhibition consisted of a collection of patterns inspired by various places, these patterns were then printed onto fabric using intaglio, relief, and offset lithographic methods and then composed into wearable objects. These objects were displayed along with photo-documentation of them in their respective locations.
This exhibition was accompanied by a thesis paper titled, Imprints of Place: Translations of Landscape as Camouflage Pattern.
